Why you should shop at a local company – Part 3

Choosing to shop with your local businesses instead of the larger chain stores has many benefits, some of which we are sure will surprise you.

We thought we would put together a series of short posts as to why you should choose your local independent business over a large, commercial supplier.

Online isn’t always best

For many of us, we believe that the absolute best deals can only be found online. Through TV adverts, radio adverts and online adverts we are constantly shown great deals that seem too good to be true, and often this is sadly the case. However, you might be surprised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops and businesses.
And it is not always about price, what about company ethics and ethos, local companies and sometimes born and driven out a passion from the owner to help towards a greater good, from helping the environment to helping local charities. You won’t know this buying always buy on the cheapest online price you can find.
For example, TV adverts for Everest Windows and Safe-Style claim they have the best deals around, but if you shop around you will soon find out that this isn’t the case. Independent companies can actually provide the same types of deals, if not better. Find out what your local area can offer you first, before checking online.

Hi I’m Kirsty owner of the refilling station. Me and my team aim to help local shoppers to reduce their packaging consumption and shop more ethically. In our ‘Zero Waste’ stores in Leeds and Harrogate, we try to source our produce from local businesses in an ethical way.

Our customers can bring along their own containers and restock on staple produce such as dried goods i.e. pasta household items including washing up liquid and much more.

We say Zero Waste but actually we’re more of a reduced waste shop, this is due to the fact that it is very difficult as a supplier to be zero waste however check out or blogs where we try and share with you how we try and make our buying choices as ethical as possible.
